Silent Nights
There are a lot of confusing things about Christmas, things that seem contradictory to or down-right wrong when compared to things we encounter in real life. Many of the songs that we sing at Christmas are so infused with a romantic view of Christ or Christmas that they add to our difficulty in understanding the eternal importance of Christmas. “Silent Night” is a beautiful and favorite Christmas song, but the idea that everything was clear and bright and beautiful (or even silent!) that first Christmas couldn’t be further from the truth. And what about our lives? What about our long nights, our silent nights when we desperately want God to say something? When God goes silent, when you can’t hear him speaking and the night is long and dark…prepare yourself to hear what he is going to say next! In Jesus, God spoke into a silent night 2000 years ago and in Jesus, God speaks into our silent nights today.
